English classes at Chico Junior High School are integrated language arts courses in which students read and respond to literature (both fiction and nonfiction), experience all stages of the writing process, and prepare and give oral presentations. Students learn and practice research skills and work on developing vocabulary, grammar, and conventions of the English language.
The curriculum for this course meets the California content standards for English Language Arts. The adopted curriculum is McGraw-Hill’s StudySync, which encompasses both a physical and digital textbook.
The Chico Unified School District’s approved novels are as follows:
Sixth Grade: Hatchet (Gary Paulsen), The City of Ember (Jeanne DuPrau), Freedom Walkers (Russell Freedman), and When Stars Are Scattered (Omar Mohamed)
Seventh Grade: Esperanza Rising (Pam Muñoz Ryan), The Giver (Lois Lowry), Touching Spirit Bear (Ben Mikaelsen), The Benefits of Being an Octopus (Ann Braden), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (William Shakespeare)
Eighth Grade: The Outsiders (S.E. Hinton), The Pearl (John Steinbeck), The Tempest (William Shakespeare), Look Both Ways (Jason Reynolds), The Diary of a Young Girl (Anne Frank), and The House on Mango Street (Sandra Cisneros)
