English classes at Chico Junior High School are integrated language arts courses in which students read and respond to literature (both fiction and nonfiction), experience all stages of the writing process (brainstorming, rough draft, revising, editing, final draft) and prepare and give oral presentations.
Students learn and practice research skills, work on developing vocabulary, basic grammar, writing and spelling skills.
English 7
The curriculum for this course meets the California content standards for English-Language Arts. The literature correlates to the 7th grade world history curriculum. McDougal Littel's The Language of Literature is our textbook. Core literature may include: Dragonwings, The Sign of the Chrysanthemum, Shabanu, Seven Daughters and Seven Sons, A Proud Taste For Scarlet and Miniver, Catherine, Called Birdy and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
English 8
The curriculum

GATE English 7 and 8
These courses
study the same curriculum as the regular English 7 and 8 courses with more
in-depth reading and writing, and a greater emphasis on learning to become
autonomous learners.
